Choosing Love

How bright the spring morning shined
Clearing the dark dreams from my mind
Washing the sleeper’s crust from my eyes
Looking deep into the mirror for an ally

Solutions in the balance thumbs confused
One over the other leaves two bruised
Eventually time will betray my masquerade
And my fear is both will fade away

  5. Great work, Michael! My favorite line was: “Solutions in the balance thumbs confused.” Makes me think of twiddling one’s thumbs while deep in thought.

    • It’s an old butcher’s (and many others) scheme who would put their thumb on the scale to make the “mark” think that they’re paying the right price ; but actually the mark would end up paying for more than they actually had.

  7. I agree with K. above – the image of “one over the other leaves two bruised” really gets to the heart of the poem. I get the sense that choosing love here is a difficult thing, with an everchanging set of requirements.
